Tutoring is a helpful way of being a second eye to someone’s essay assignment. As a tutor, it is always important to make the tutee feel as comfortable as possible because they might be already having trouble with their essay assignment. Always let the tutee know that you will help as much as you can, and always encourage coming back for another session or anytime they need help. The first impression the tutee has on you will be the last impression. As you always start to look over your tutees' paper, give some positive feedback to the tutee, but do let them know there are some things that need to be worked on. Positive feedback from the beginning of tutoring helps the student to feel more comfortable with pushing their self harder on their assignment. As a tutor, I would help and encourage the student as I would want if I was being tutored.
When reading over your tutees paper, even though you might be tempted to fix their mistakes, remember you are there to help and not to be a co-author. Don’t go straight for the LOC's of the paper which are commas, punctuations, and language rules, but try to see and make sure the tutee has an understanding of the assignment. Even if the tutee doesn’t understand the assignment try to pull them to think outside the box by asking questions to lead them to getting an idea. Always make sure there are no distractions in your tutoring session. As tutoring, don’t allow yourself or the tutee to have their phone ringing or out during the session. This will show the tutee that their paper is important to you as it is to them. These tutoring do’s and don’ts will lead to a good tutoring session and much encouragement.
